Stefanie Feilner from FAU received the EnCN Energy Award in the storage category for her master’s thesis in Prof. Dr. Katharina Herkendell’s working group. In her work, she simulated the flow within our MultiKulit reactor. This confirmed observations made in the model. A spiral flow forms in the main reactor, which is distributed to the side reactors in the lower area. By simulating different stirrer geometries at different stirring speeds, the optimum stirrer was identified, which has now been specially cast in the FAU workshops. The question of whether microorganisms could be harmed by the stirring was also addressed. The selected stirrer geometry and rotational speed guarantee such a low-shear flow that the cells of cultivated microorganisms are not damaged. For this outstanding work entitled “CFD-based optimizations on an innovative bioreactor”, Ms Feilner received prize money at the award ceremony on 30.11.2023 together with other outstanding final theses. The MultiKulti team would like to congratulate her on this great achievement.
